New comers to the college game are making splashes in the tourney. Freshman Juju Watkins a 27 point a game scorer, 2nd to only Caitlyn Clark with 31.8 ppg in the nation, during the regular season led USC to their first number 1 seed since 1986. Juju recently had 26 points 11 rebounds in a win over Kansas. Baylor waits on Juju and USC in the sweet 16.
Anther freshman to making noise in the tournament is Hannah Hidalgo. Hannah led Notre Dame to the ACC championship and all while making the Associated Press All American team. Notre Dame faces off against Oregon State and we cant wait to see what happens there.
Paige Bueckers is a familiar name in basketball households. Although she has been out for some time she is back with vengeance leading UCONN to the sweet 16 with a win over Syracuse scoring 32 points. Is this her year to finally hoist the trophy? After dealing with all of the injuries she recently recovered from would be a huge cinderella story for her.
We’re going to also give an honorable mention to freshman Audi Crooks. Although Iowa State lost in a nail biter to Stanford and did not progress to the next round. She put the league on notice. Audi became the 2nd player (women or men) to score 40 points while shooting 90% with the 1st person being Bill Walton. I think she’s in good company and only completing her freshman year, means there’s a ton of basketball left in the tank.
I know I said I would touch on the mens game earlier in the article but, I lied it’s the year of woman’s basketball. With so many more talented woman to mention this year we’ll wait until next week to see what teams have made it to the next round. Of course we can’t without mentioning one of the possible college basketball goats Caitlyn Clark. We’ll see how far she can take her team this year as well.
