It’s March, and for basketball fans all over the world we know that means March Madness but, this year something feels a little different.
This college basketball season a lot of the attention has shifted toward woman’s basketball, with the stand out stars being on the woman’s teams. In recent years the women’s game has seen a huge surge in talent and overall competitiveness.
Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, two NBA hall of famers as well as 75th anniversary members, recently had a conversation on their podcast KGCertified where KG stated, “Women’s basketball is electric. It’s blowing the guys game out of the water.” KG went on to say that he knew more girls than guys in college and was not familiar with who the top mens NCAA players were but, knew the girls. Paul Pierce stated that he has watched more women’s basketball than mens college basketball this year.
This season players like Caitlin Clark has commanded attention, as she has done over her whole college career. Caitlin has eclipsed Pete Maravich’s scoring record making her the all time NCAA Scoring champion for both men and women.
Another bright spot in the women’s game would be freshman Juju Watkins, who has helped lead the USC Trojans women’s team to a 26-5 record. In her first season she has made an immediate impact as the second highest scorer in the WNCAA behind Caitlin Clark average over 27 points per game. After one season is Caitlin’s scoring record already in jeopardy?
Let’s not forget the polarizing Angel Reese who has been electric and one of the NCAA most popular athletes. According to On3.com Angel is a top 10 NIL athlete with earnings said to be close to 2 million dollars. As great as Angel is LSU lost a close game to the number 1 seeded South Carolina Gamecocks for the SEC tournament championship. Coach Dawn Staley has led her team to a perfect season and does not look to end it here as she has her eyes set on the NCAA championship.
Although on a few of the NCAA women were mentioned there are a ton that have been making waves across the country. Hopefully this traction for the NCAA translates into the next level of play as we continue to strive for equality in the WNBA. Thoughts, comments, concerns? Let us know in the comments below.
