Looks like Russel Wilson is out in Denver but what does it mean? A lot of times we assume that a player gets cut because of their performance on the court, field or whatever their territory of play is not being up to par but, in this case is that true?
This past season may not have been Russell Wilson’s best year in terms of stats and performance but, he still finishing 8th in the passer ratings with a RTG of 98.0, 9th in touchdowns 1 touchdown behind current Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes, and 5th in TD/INT ratio with a 3.25. Although these numbers may not win a Super Bowl, they aren’t too shabby, especially since he’s now out of a job.
Let’s talk about what this move actually means for Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos. For the Broncos, it’s just business as usual. Russell Wilson signed a massive contract extension after his blockbuster trade to Denver from Seattle in 2022 with the main details being a 5 year $242.5 million extension. So most would think that this marriage would have lasted a little longer than 2 season.
Denver looks to unload Russell now since he still has value, although over the next 2 years they still have to pay him in excess of 85 million. 35.4 million in 2024 and 49.6 million in 2025.But, why does this makes sense? Denver feels that a championship is not in the future with Russell at the helm. With this moves it Helps Denver by freeing up money for some new pieces and of course a new QB. If Russell also plays for another team in the 2024 season whatever compensation his new team pays him will be subtracted to from what he is owed by the Denver Broncos. Effectively recouping money for the Denver Broncos.
As for Russell Wilson…… nothing changes he still gets paid. Which side do you think won this transaction and where do you think Russell will land? Let us know below.
